Tour History & Research

Who researches the stories?
Every story is originally researched by Susan Johnson, a published nonfiction author with The History Press. Susan works with the Arizona Historical Society, local historians, and primary source archives.
What makes this different from other Tucson ghost tours?
Three things: original archival research by a published author (not recycled Wikipedia or franchise scripts), a 4.9 Google rating across 229 reviews, and guides who internalize the research rather than reading from scripts.
How long has Freaky Foot Tours been operating?
Since 2015. Founded in Flagstaff by Susan Johnson and her son Nick Jones. The Tucson tour launched in December 2024, with Prescott following in 2025.
Is Susan Johnson a real historian?

The Stops

What's the most haunted stop?
Guests and guides have different answers, but Hotel Congress and the Pioneer Hotel consistently generate the strongest reactions. The Pioneer Hotel fire story is the one guests carry with them long after the tour ends. Read the full stories on our tour route page.
Tell me about the Hotel Congress.
Built in 1919, Hotel Congress is where John Dillinger and three of his gang were captured in 1934 after a fire. But the Dillinger story is just the most famous chapter. Room 242, a Victorian gentleman, and a cowboy in the basement all have their own stories. Read the full Hotel Congress story.
What happened at the Pioneer Hotel?
On December 20, 1970, a fire broke out during a Christmas party. 28 lives were lost. The hotel had no sprinkler system and no fire doors. The tragedy changed fire codes across the state of Arizona. Read the full Pioneer Hotel story.
Is the Santa Rita Hotel still standing?
No. The last of the Santa Rita Hotel was demolished in 2009. But seven people died there in separate incidents spanning decades, and the stories remain. Read the full Santa Rita Hotel story.
What's the Dillinger connection?
John Dillinger and three gang members were captured at Hotel Congress in January 1934 after a fire forced their evacuation. Firemen grew suspicious of their heavy luggage and large tips, discovered their photos in True Detective magazine, and alerted authorities.
